We prove two versions of Beurling’s theorem for Riemannian symmetric spaces of arbitrary rank. One of them uses the group Fourier transform and the other uses the Helgason Fourier transform. This is the master theorem in the quantitative uncertainty principle.

In this paper we prove that two Cartan subspaces of a semisimple symmetric pair (g, τ) are conjugate under G = Int(g) if and only if they are conjugate under (Gτ )0. Moreover we derive a double coset decomposition for G, which improves the results of Oshima and Matsuki.

The notion of relative cuspidality for distinguished representations attached to p-adic symmetric spaces is introduced. A characterization of relative cuspidality in terms of Jacquet modules is given and a generalization of Jacquet’s subrepresentation theorem to the relative case (symmetric space case) is established.

We prove the following vanishing theorem. Let M be an irreducible symmetric space of noncompact type whose dimension exceeds 2 and M 6= SO0(2, 2)/SO(2)×SO(2). Let π : E → M be any vector bundle, Then any E−valued L harmonic 1-form over M vanishes. In particular we get the vanishing theorem for harmonic maps from irreducible symmetric spaces of noncompact type.

The Fourier coefficients of a smooth K-invariant function on a compact symmetric spaceM = U/K are given by integration of the function against the spherical functions. For functions with support in a neighborhood of the origin, we describe the size of the support by means of the exponential type of a holomorphic extension of the Fourier coefficients. 1
